Cades Cove

We spent time with my parents camping at Cades Cove this weekend, in the Great Smoky Mountain Park. I had Trevor and his cousin with us so I was not afforded the luxury of spending time thinking through any of my shots. It was "click - run go catch up with the kids" the whole time. I find that frustrating but I just kept reminding myself this weekend wasn't about photography, it was family.

It's the land of quiet forests, mountain streams, and rhododendron. And home of the North American Tail-less Monkey
The rhododendron were a little past their peak bloom but we still found a few on our hike down Anthony Creek. Of course, we did the obligatory tour through the Cades Cove 11 mile loop.
We didn't see any black bear this weekend although they have been very active this year. My mom got these pics off of Roaring Fork Parkway a few days earlier. These were taken from her van with her point and shoot.

  1. Wonderful shots...I haven't seen that species of monkey in quite a few years...my lil Grand-monkey is 21 and doesn't see granny as much as she would like, but I have the memories of the romps in the mountains...oh for a digital camera back in the days!!!

  3. What a gorgeous area. You have some great shots here, particularly the one of the rare tail-less monkey. What luck to have spotted one of those!

  4. I remember when we saw a bear at Yosemite. A whole group of people there soooo overreacted. You are in a National Park, this is normal. I do love bears, but over short distances they can outrun a racehorse. Be prepared :-). I've worked with some tailless monkeys. This seems like a wonderful trip.~Mary

  5. I wasn't too far from here this weekend! I was visiting Asheville (and not entirely impressed, for some reason) and became physically ill from the popping ears and carsickness, but I still think it's beautiful. However, I've learned that I am a Florida girl as I have no desire to visit the mountains again anytime soon!

  12. Thank god she wasn't stupid and got out of the car or anything... with lil' ones close by and all, mama bear could be quite vicious.

  13. For a click and run weekend, you sure did great! I love the fence shot and the shack shot looks very rustic. I can't believe you saw bears, that is awesome, (but scary) and we hope mama bear wasn't around, wow.
