That is the flag this morning at the historic Tellico Blockhouse near Vonore, TN.

We literally stumbled across it this morning while on a country drive and I found myself getting an education, not only about local, but national history. This was a fortress that was central in early relations with the Cherokee Nation. Now it is just a layout of stone foundations where it used to be.

We were the only ones there as we strolled the chilly grounds on the banks of the Little Tennessee River. It was quiet and easy to imagine what it must have been like. It was also somber when you realized that four treaties with the Cherokee were signed here, setting in motion the forced ceding of land and relocation via the "Trail of Tears".

That's what I find fascinating about traveling the back roads. I never know what I'm going to find.
